Andrea Unger

In 2008 Andrea Unger took the Robbins World Cup of Futures Trading with a 672% return. In 2009 he won it again with 115%. In 2010 he took both the Futures and Forex divisions in the same year with 240%. In 2012 he won the Futures and Forex titles a fourth time, in the quarterly cycle. Four wins, three of them consecutive. No one before or since has won the WCTC more than once across the same span. The Italian-German mechanical engineer who trained directly under Larry Williams in 2004 is, by the leaderboard, the most accomplished competitor in the championship's modern era.

He came in from outside finance — a Politecnico di Milano mechanical engineer, a Mensa member, no formal trading background until he walked out of engineering in 2001 to learn the markets. Williams' 2004 mentorship was the inflection. The method that built the four titles is systematic, multi-strategy, multi-market: bias models, breakouts, reversals, swing — all rule-driven, all backtested, all running across uncorrelated futures and forex pairs simultaneously. Unger's own line on backtesting, from the Better System Trader interview that became his most-quoted public moment, is the rule-of-thumb that students still rebuild around: I run optimisations to study market behaviour, not to find the best values.

Unger Academy, founded 2015, is the largest Italian-language algorithmic-trading education brand in Europe and has produced two further WCTC champions of its own — Stefano Serafini (2017, 217%) and Petra Zacek (2018, 258%). The pedagogical lineage from Williams (1987) through Unger (2008-2012) to the Unger Academy students of the late 2010s is now traceable across forty years of the same Chicago championship.
