Mike McDonald

🇨🇦Canada

Youngest player ever to win an EPT — and the only WSOT podium finisher who built his bankroll at poker tables, not on charts.

In 2008 Mike McDonald became the youngest player ever to win a European Poker Tour title. Twelve years later he was running a crypto troop on Bybit's first-ever WSOT and finishing third out of 135 teams. The troop's name — "Live Traders Suck" — is a poker in-joke; his real catchphrase, "Live Players Suck," refers to the abusive amateurs he had to absorb on his way up the tournament circuit. The crossover from cards to crypto perpetuals isn't unusual at the top of the game-theory world, but McDonald is the one who put a name on it at Bybit's debut event.

McDonald's poker resume — over US$13 million in live tournament cashes, an EPT win at 18, regular appearances at the high-roller events — is the spine of how he approaches risk on Bybit. He treats troop format as a coordination problem first and a directional one second: pick traders whose distributions don't correlate, size such that the troop's aggregate variance stays bounded. He hasn't published a detailed methodology for crypto, but his public poker writing makes the parallels obvious to anyone who reads both.

Outside markets and cards he runs gambling-adjacent business interests and posts sporadically about both worlds on X. He is one of the rare WSOT podium names who is a public, search-engine-real person — most of the other top-three captains across six editions of the tournament are pseudonymous Korean or Russian streamers. For a profiles page, McDonald is the highest-confidence WSOT 2020 entry.
